AMAG TopPlate® RM Construction Kit

Three material solutions for precise and economical component machining

With its modular AMAG TopPlate® RM system, AMAG offers a coordinated trio of aluminium plate solutions designed to meet different requirements for dimensional stability, strength and workability. The product family comprises the 6RM 300, 6RM 360 and 7RM variants. The AMAG TopPlate® RM family is geared towards customers in mechanical engineering, automation technology, fixture construction and machine tool building, as these fields require dimensionally stable and directly machinable plates for complex geometries and narrow tolerances.

AMAG TopPlate® 7RM serves as a particularly impressive demonstration of the RM family’s potential. AMAG TopPlate® 7RM is produced in a specifically coordinated process (Figure 1). From hot forming to heat treatment to final milling, all parameters are geared towards achieving a homogeneous material structure and minimal internal stresses.Controlled temperatures and defined per-pass reduction rates during hot rolling achieve a consistent microstructure. The subsequent solution heat treatment and quenching steps stabilize the microstructure throughout the plate’s entire cross-section. A targeted stretching process (Figure 2) reduces any residual stresses and improves flatness. The final artificial aging (Figure 3) is subject to precise temperature monitoring and ensures minimal variance in mechanical properties.

The plates are milled on both sides and can be supplied film-coated upon request. Milling is performed in line with defined parameters and helps to ensure constant dimensional accuracy and low surface roughness. This provides an ideal basis for subsequent processing.

Reliable workability

AMAG TopPlate® 7RM is designed to be suitable for mechanical processing right away. The material’s low residual stress means it remains dimensionally stable, even when subjected to asymmetrical processing. This reduces the need for reworking and ensures reproducible results, especially for complex geometries and narrow tolerances. The finished surface means it can be sent directly for machining without the need for pre-milling. This reduces set-up times along with the overall processing workload. Thanks to the narrow thickness tolerance of ± 0.1 mm across the entire thickness range from 10 to 30 mm, blanks can be planned closer to the final geometry, which reduces material use, chip volume and tool wear. The consistent surface structure, with a maximum roughness of 0.40 μm, supports downstream processes such as anodizing. Color deviations and inconsistent layers are kept to a minimum.Flatness values of up to 0.50 mm/m (for thicknesses > 15 mm) offer a reliable basis for automated manufacturing and minimize rejects. For manufacturing firms, this means fewer corrective work steps, higher repeatability and increased predictability.

Dimensions and tolerances

AMAG TopPlate® 7RM is available in thicknesses from 10 mm to 30 mm, in widths from 1,000 mm to 1,535 mm and in lengths from 2,000 mm to 3,670 mm (with a standard format of 1,520 x 3,020 mm). All plates are supplied with cut lateral edges and a protective film coating on both sides. A single-sided film coating is also available. The geometric tolerances are guided by the needs of industrial series manufacturing. Mechanical parameters are monitored throughout the production process. An adhesive label with a unique identifier (TPN) is attached to each plate.

A comparison of other variants

By introducing AMAG TopPlate® 6RM 300 and 6RM 360, AMAG has augmented its portfolio of high-strength rolled plates with a two more solutions specifically designed to meet different requirements for strength, dimensional stability and workability. Together with the established AMAG TopPlate® 7RM, these two new products form a modular kit of material solutions, enabling customers to make a differentiated selection. AMAG TopPlate® 6RM 300 is designed for applications with moderate strength requirements. It offers a balance of good workability, dimensional stability and economical material utilization. With a minimum yield tensile strength of 295 MPa, it is suitable for the construction of fixtures, machine covers and holding systems that feature moderate mechanical stresses.AMAG TopPlate® 6RM 360 positions itself between the two other products with a minimum yield tensile strength of 365 MPa. This product is particularly well suited for applications that combine moderate strength with good formability and anodizing characteristics, such as visible machine elements and high-precision components.

The AMAG TopPlate® RM construction kit makes it possible to satisfy different technical requirements without creating additional complexity in either procurement or manufacturing processes. Three coordinated plate solutions – one production concept.
